YEAR OF THE DRAGON

i have eight films stashed in a box from my adventures, desperately awaiting the funds required to develop

them. i am thoroughly determined to explode this journal with content this year but until i can afford the

upkeep its going to be taking a vow of impoverished silence.

meanwhile, if you'd like to help a brother out, i have a song up on bandcamp that's ripe for the 'choose your

own price' buyin' if you will: under by watercolours

i'm currently reviewing the treatment for another music video to follow my last self-funded one. this time i

was awarded a grant to pay for the recording and video of a new song called 'pazzida', though i harbour

slight concerns over it's incongruity with the other release, i hope you'll like it for all it's poptacularness none

the less. it's special because it contains many a hand clap and choir yelp from a loveable group of scamps -

many of whom don't populate my immediate geographical vicinity any more.

otherwise my 2012 thus far has consisted of:

- working most days and most nights in brooklyn on fresh new songs.

- willing snowfall before my departure back to summertime in the olde country (unfortunately unfulfilled)

- spending three disconnected days in what can only be described as heavenly hokianga.

- attempting to render my resume more charming in an effort to win a new job.

- fitting an eight-piece band into my bedroom for rehearsals.

- being one half of a tramp couple, surviving solely on lentil soup for an entire week.

it feels quite strange to be so candid. does it colour you with discomfort? might try it out for a spell.

over night in early november, when it was too cold to swim, we drove to the nearest cove, shuddered by the
shore and threw ourselves into the dark water. you were quiet after the excitement of being soaked in cold
on a night like that and you said you were thinking about breathing underwater. i was thinking about you
and how we were suddenly swimming in the same waters after being ships in the night for so long.

sherie muijs gifted me a beautiful yellow raincoat from her 2010 winter collection right before i left.
it was perfect for traipsing quite recklessly through the rainstorm that bucketed down the day i ran an errand
across town - and prompted some serious singin' and stompin' in the rain on my way back. it'll serve me rather
well on this next leg through the winter season in NYC.

the loveliest lady by the name of frankie dropped me a line on my september trip to the big apple. she took me
for some wholesome american pie in brooklyn and then later on through the rain to rifle through some already
traveled postcards of centuries past. a few days after that we - with an additional member in anna li -
clambered through crowded subway cars, making a few wrong turns until we got to central park to take a few
photos for frankie's online vintage store LAWRENCE. you can see those after the jump.

we walked all evening. it was a clear night.

i met jackson while he was toiling behind a mixing desk. my friends were wildly drunk and painted in mexican
'day of the dead' skull faces. i wore a convincing wig. he smoked a cigarette and we took a turn around a
graveyard in the 'spirit' of the evening.

after this newsprinted meal we saw a giant tropical fish in a medium sized tank. apparently he was happy.

LINEN LAND

I picked up some black and white negatives today so this blog may be seeing in monochrome for the next

bout of posts.

My flatmates have been morphing our common area into one monumental craft corner/dance space/photography

studio for their various creative pursuits of late. I built this bedroom fort in quiet participation and to dry

my freshly laundered linen. It stayed up far longer than the water vapours dampening the sheets until i had

to dismantle it to fend off the squalor settling in.

I'm leaving for LA next week to participate in some song-singing with my friends The Veils. Aside from the

obligatory 'in n out' burger experience, has anyone any suggestions for interesting places to go/eat at/see?

after returning to tackle the end of the university year, it feels like the magic of september in new york occurred
eons ago. these photographs were taking on my last day, on an incredible rooftop in chelsea.

so many cinematic stories from this trip! a stranger donating his own umbrella in the pouring rain, fresh friends
found in strange places and stranger scenarios, stumbling around brooklyn on rollerskates, buying religious
holograms from a bodega in the middle of the night, meeting the newborns of new friends (i'm looking at you,
frankie baby), having firemen buy us pancakes, being woefully swindled by a ticket scalper..

i asked sam nixon to take some press shots for WATERCOLOURS and he took us (me, the newly arrived
katherine and her friend whose name evades me right now) to the summit of an incredibly lofty building from
which you could see the water and the city all in one eyeful. quite the love letter, nyc.

my lens is doing this thing where it fails phenomenally causing my heart to droop when my photos get
developed. i'm currently auditioning a new camera.

here is the fort i've been sleeping in. last night it was converted into a viewing arena with a projector beaming
the tegan and sara 'get along' dvd onto the opposing wall. my old friend kj and i would drive around in
high school with the 'so jealous' record blaring from her tiny white car. youth shaper.

a couple of weeks ago i shared a birthday party with dave 'jezebel' parker at my new digs. talita's cake/macaron
tower contributions as well as daves' homemade breads, pesto and 12 layer cake were astoundingly good.
a golden haired boy even brought along a few bottles of 'foxton fizz' creaming soda. i can only hope
he wrangled them off the 'super trash' guy who lurks the streets for discarded treasures and sells them
back to you for more clams than they're probably worth. i'm a sucker and will always find something
to swap my dimes for.

i took a few photos but left my camera unattended when i crashed only to find a few snaps of the lovely anna
caking it up after hours near the end of the roll. here she can be seen licking the 2 block chocolate cake with
accompanying vanilla bean custard off of her fingers. nice.

by jove, we've finished it at last! after spending an obscenely lengthy spell in reubens' cave, here are the fruits
of our long-time (and extremely delayed) labour. my debut music video for Watercolours - 'Under'

this video required many a dive roll into survival mode. i weathered:

- reubens' smut mouth
- barreling headfirst into a ditch whilst on wheels
- the horrors of technology
- my mothers' wrath when she discovered the thousands of bugs we accidentally let into the house after using
the lightbox outside with the door open (insects really dig that thing)
- hungry cats (it licked my hand)
- too much fun

(a few weeks ago I got to partake in the live re-incarnation of Punches, a band I've been hearing in the
peripheral of my scope and falling in love with for the better part of the last year. James has been labouring
over making and mixing the record for months and its steadily nearing perfection. Distance keeps them from
playing on the regular, with Kelly (subject of these photographs) dwelling in Nashville and James here in
Auckland. the small window of time in which she returned was quickly swallowed by gig readying and for
one night the songs came to life. i felt very lucky to participate in such a rare occurrence.)

campus a low hum is a killer camp/varsity-style music festival held just outside of wellington. devoid of all the usual
festival nasties like advertising, 'lockdowns' and 'VIP' areas, you never know who's playing so you go with the sole
understanding that you will have a fun-ridden time. (and we did).

['further reading' will lead you to more photographs. i've been listening to 'this american life' podcasts a fair bit lately.
one of my particular favourites so far is 'accidental documentries' which got me thinking about the manner in which i
photograph and share. i usually cull those with their own countenance which i deem to antagonize the intended perception.
now i've been looking back through my archives and viewing those cast-offs with more care. every last one is a stitch in
some story]

distractions. i've been there and back to play in an empty pool dressed in a sparkle suit with lashings of silver
warpaint across my cheeks. i've enrolled myself for a third year of art school and have been dreaming up
secrets to cram into my songs. come to foothills tomorrow if you're around. teacups are going to really enjoy

MADAME HAWKE have just released a journal that my babelicious friend chelsie and i got to frolic around
for a few months ago. it's a beautiful ongoing project that engages different mediums in continuously unfolding
conversation:

"Madame Hawke presents Journal Number 3.

In which Emily Miller-Sharma (designer) and Guy Coombes (photographer) worked with Chelsea and
Chelsie to document the interaction between their two personalities.

Henrietta Harris submitted illustrations to a verbal brief of "Just paint some beautiful pictures
like you do. Some abstractions of fruit and vegetables please", furthering Madame Hawke's
endeavour to encourage inter-disciplinary collaboration.

The text throughout the Journal is from the discussion led by Rosabel Tan and Sylvia Varnham
O'Regan over Birthday Pasta one afternoon (bonus recipe below!). Six people talked about what it
meant to be human, what it meant to be flawed and the beauty of imperfection."

i got rather excited when i saw my enlarged face on the wall of one of their boutiques. i had to text it to my

mum.

NEWSPAPER HATS AND OTHER TALES

the aforementioned 'rag|ship' shoot is yet to be primped for public consumption but there's plenty to placehold.
a triptych of good characters from a new year getaway where you could see more ocean in a eyeful than i've ever been
able to fathom (evidence to come). there was debate this night over how to concoct a respectable newspaper hat.

(so i forgot to mention, last friday i rather dragged my feet to work with an acute case of f.o.m.o.
the prospect of missing on what everyone in my immediate vicinity was so giddy about (the 'big day ou t'
music festival) anointed me with a palpable mood pout. to my absolute surprise (and delayed glee due to
such surprisement), subject A of these photographs swooped into work, planted the table with a ticket
and gave me orders to join him at the festival after work. when i got there it rained, it poured, it rained
some more

..and i had the best time.)

(today i was told my camera would 'never take another picture'. today i was also told i look

last night i viewed the video in which i played a constellation. i think it's hilarious but i also

  i had been working on a collaboration with emma of rag pony  at the end of last year
  to produce some shoots and alas! though our (brilliant) original idea hasn't come to fruition,
  we're going to soldier on with a variation until we can afford to print a (brilliant) journal

  it's finished. i also read Haruki Murakami's 'Norwegian Wood'. ricocheting between
  classic and contemporary literature prevents unhealthy immersion into the worlds of
  well-weaved characters, i find.

well i just got back from melbourne.

as the sun set on my second day, the sky was awash with warmth after crying all morning.

everyone rushed to document it and i've not changed this photo one iota. you can only imagine how it looked splayed out before your very eyes. quite a spectacle from hongi's balcony.

before i left i took some photographs at 'phase three' of oliver's birthday party. the phase where everybody met up at his flat and watched 'space jam' for old times sake.

reuben and i had to come late and leave early because of music video shooting. while we were waiting for everyone to return from phase 2 - congregating at possibly the only pizza hut that still does buffet - we bought ice creams, lotto scratchies and old rocket balloons for a make shift birthday present.

i've been reading about the mitford sisters which is prompting me to light some fires under my committment to documentation. there is so much insight into the narratives of their lives through the collation of their journals and letters. they left a palpable trail to follow.

so, lets!

on that note, i'm going to melbourne this week to visit a thoroughly missed friend.

until then i'll be attempting to finish a self-funded music video i've embarked on with plenty-aforementioned friend reuben who has taken the flailing project under his wing. hopefully it will be soaring across the finish line in no time so i can release something!

a very little christmas

you may or may not have gathered that i've been involved with a christmas album.
(probably not as i have been regretfully elusive re: blogging of late)

WELL

thanks to the combined masterminds of dave parker - who recorded and produced and essentially poured all of his goodness into this stirling project for free - and marty 'border music' jones - who's gallantly fathering this lovechild with dave - a christmas album of the littlest (but bestest) proportions will be hunting you down to make sure you enjoy (or in some cases - drown in the melancholy of -) the silly season.

james duncan (go and swoon yourself silly at the 8 minute track he's been working on for his band 'punches's record) and i concocted a song for it and reuben stephens (attack his name with your mouse and a beautiful video - created at reubens hand for a band in which he plays the bass - will appear) and i concocted the artwork.

the free download portion of the programming begins TOMORROW (monday!!)!

i encourage everyone to go HERE and make sure you get it downloaded before it gets so far into december that you denounce all christmas related music for sheer misery over hearing 'jingle bells' eleventy billion times.

i may have to disclaim that our (james and i) song is so unabashedly sexy that while we were writing/recording it i took myself outside to have a small sulk in daves hammock over that very fact. true story.

i usually have a lot more to say than i write in these posts but when the time comes to arrange the words, my shoulders kind of slump in pre-defeat at the mind-mess i have to untangle and concern over how much i should censor. and this doesn't really qualify as an attempt.

i'm supposed to be organizing words into lyrics but instead i'm listening to photographer Lise Sarfati talk about her work. i dont understand french but i dont really mind just hearing words.
